Syllabus connections for Stage 4:

Objective: Through responding to and composing a wide range of texts in context and through close study of texts, students will develop skills, knowledge and understanding in order to use language and communicate appropriately and effectively.

Outcome 5: A student makes informed language choices to shape meaning with accuracy, clarity and coherence.

Teaching Notes for the Lesson:


The class you are teaching will have already read Katherine Patterson’s “A Bridge to Terabithia.” For the next three lessons they will be creating their own Terabithia. This is a breakdown of the lessons.

Lesson 1- In this lesson the students will be creating a podcast. First the students will need to create a mind map using either Mindnode or Inspiration, all of which have been uploaded onto the school’s computer systems. In this mind map students will be brainstorming about what is in their Terabithia, what it is called, what it looks like, who lives there etc. After students have done this they need to record a podcast in which they talk about their Terabithia. Students need to:
· Include a detailed description of what their Terabithia looks like.
· The name of their personal Terabithia.
· Where there Terabithia is located, including feathers such as what time period it is set in, what the weather is like, what the land space is etc.
· The students need to use descriptive language in their podcast. They need to describe the colours, sounds, people and animals.

Lesson 2- In this lessons the students will be creating a Photo Story, an interactive presentation, which they will eventually show to the class. Students need to find pictures that they think best represent their Terabithia. These pictures may be from the web, ensure that students follow the correct copyright protocol if they are to do this, or their own pictures. Students also need to:
· Use Photo Story to create an interactive presentation.
· Choose a layout and style for each page/section of their Terabithia.
· Ensure that they continually save their work.
· Ensure that they have a separate file which is their podcast, and also a separate file where there is a copy of their bibliography.
At a later date students will show this Photo Story to the class.



Lesson 3- In this lesson student will be writing their inaugural speech for their new kingdom. Students need to ensure that within this speech they have incorporated:
- Conveyed the type of ruler they will be through their language.

- Describe the purpose of their world

- Ask them to describe why they have included the different elements in their world and their significance to the world as a whole.

- Will their world have certain jobs needed to be completed?

If students need inspiration they can watch the two links found on the Webquest. If students need further inspiration they can look up speeches such as Obama’s “Yes We Can” speech and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”
